The cleaning process doesn’t begin with chemicals. It begins with the garment.
Every item that comes into a professional dry cleaner should be inspected before anything else happens. We check the care label — not all garments labelled dry clean only tolerate the same solvents or temperatures. We check the fabric — wool, silk, cashmere, and synthetics all behave differently. We check for existing damage — a weak seam, a fragile lining, a button that might not survive the process.
Stains get identified and pre-treated individually. A grease stain needs a different treatment from a wine stain. Treating them the same way is how garments come back worse than they went in. Pre-treatment is applied by hand before the main clean.
This stage is the most important part of the whole process. Skip it and you’re just hoping for the best.
Despite the name, dry cleaning uses liquid — just not water. The solvent most commonly used in professional dry cleaning is perchloroethylene, known in the industry as perc. Newer, greener alternatives include liquid silicone and hydrocarbon solvents.

The garment comes out of the machine clean but not finished. This is the stage most people don’t think about — and it’s where a lot of the visible quality difference between dry cleaners comes from.
Finishing involves steaming, pressing, and reshaping. A suit jacket needs to be pressed on a form or a pressing machine that restores its three-dimensional shape — not just run over with a flat iron. The lapels need setting. The sleeves need to hang correctly. The trousers need a sharp crease in the right place.
Finishing is skilled work. A garment that comes back clean but badly pressed has been half-done.

The chemical solvent is effective but not aggressive on fabric — done at the right frequency, it doesn’t damage wool or natural fibres. Done too often, it can gradually weaken them.
