Leather jackets pick up a lot. Perspiration works into the lining. Grease builds up on collars and cuffs. Salt from winter pavements leaves white tide marks on the lower panels. And unlike most garments, there is no option to put the jacket in a machine and see what happens. With leather, what happens is usually irreversible.
We clean leather jackets at Angelz on Arlington Way, a short walk from Angel tube. Each jacket is assessed individually before any cleaning begins. Pricing is given at drop-off after we have seen the garment — leather jackets vary significantly in construction, finish, and condition, and what the job involves depends on the specific piece.
We work with most types of leather jacket — classic smooth leather biker jackets, tailored leather blazers, leather bomber jackets, and leather-panelled garments where leather sits alongside other fabrics. We also handle leather coats and longer leather outerwear.
The construction matters as much as the material. A jacket with a fully leather exterior and a standard lining is a different job from one with leather sleeves, a fabric body, and a quilted inner. We assess the full garment before starting, not just the most visible part.
Water and leather do not work. When leather gets wet and dries unevenly — as it always does in a washing machine or tumble dryer — it can stiffen, crack, shrink, and lose its natural oils permanently. The dye can bleed. The surface finish can peel or mottle. Seams can distort.
Some people use specialist leather cleaning products at home with reasonable results for minor surface marks. For a full clean — something that addresses ingrained dirt, odour, lining staining, and overall restoration of the leather — professional cleaning is the right approach.
Leather UK, the trade body for the UK leather industry, notes that leather is a natural material that responds to moisture and heat in unpredictable ways depending on how it has been tanned and finished. That unpredictability is exactly why we assess each jacket individually rather than applying a single method to everything.
Suede and nubuck are the finishes that cause the most concern in the shop, and understandably so. The napped surface — the soft, slightly textured face of the leather — is easily marked and can be permanently damaged by moisture, incorrect brushing, or the wrong cleaning agent.
We clean suede and nubuck jackets using methods suited to the finish. Surface marks, scuffs, and general dulling from wear are addressed during the cleaning process. Salt staining — common in winter — is treated before the main clean. The nap is raised and finished after cleaning so the jacket comes back with the texture restored rather than flattened.
If a suede jacket has been caught in heavy rain and has dried with water marks, bring it in as soon as possible. Water marks in suede are easier to treat before they fully set.
The lining of a leather jacket is often the part that needs the most attention, and the part that gets overlooked. Linings absorb perspiration directly, and over time that builds up into something that cleaning the exterior alone will not fix. We clean the full jacket — exterior and lining — as part of the same process.
If the lining itself has torn or pulled away from the jacket, we can repair that separately. Our tailoring team handles lining replacements and repairs for leather jackets as part of our broader alteration work.
Older leather jackets need extra care. Vintage leather that has dried out, cracked slightly, or faded unevenly is more vulnerable during the cleaning process than newer leather in good condition. We take a more cautious approach with vintage pieces — slower, with more checking at each stage.
For premium leather jackets from brands like Belstaff, AllSaints, or similar — pieces where the jacket is worth significantly more than a standard high street piece — we discuss the approach with you before starting. There is no single right answer for every valuable leather jacket. We prefer a conversation first.
Burberry garments with leather detailing have a dedicated page — our Burberry coat cleaning service in Angel covers the specific considerations for that brand.
Clean leather still needs conditioning. The cleaning process removes dirt but can also strip some of the natural oils that keep leather supple. We condition leather after cleaning as part of the service, using a product suited to the specific finish.
A leather jacket that is conditioned regularly — not just cleaned — stays soft, flexible, and crack-free for much longer than one that only gets attention when it looks visibly dirty. If your jacket has dried out between cleans, bring it in. We can assess whether conditioning alone will help or whether a full clean is needed.
We handle all types of outerwear. Our coat dry cleaning service in Angel covers wool, puffer, raincoat, and long coats from £17.99. A full list of what we dry clean is on our dry cleaning page for Angel.
We are at 18 Arlington Way, Angel, EC1R 1UY — two minutes on foot from Angel tube on the Northern Line. Customers come in from across Islington, Clerkenwell, Pentonville, Finsbury, and King’s Cross.
No booking needed. Bring the jacket in and we will assess it with you before anything starts. We give you a price and a collection date at drop-off.
How long does leather jacket cleaning take?
Most leather jackets are ready within three to five working days. The conditioning and finishing stage after cleaning takes time to do properly. If you need the jacket back by a specific date, mention it when you drop off.
Can you remove a stubborn grease mark from leather?
Often yes, depending on how long the mark has been there and what type of leather finish is involved. Grease that has sat on leather for months is harder to treat than a recent mark. Bring it in and we will look at it before quoting.
Can you clean just the lining without cleaning the exterior?
We assess each jacket individually. In some cases, a partial clean focusing on the lining is the right approach — particularly if the exterior is in good condition and does not need a full clean. We discuss what makes sense for the specific jacket.
Do you clean leather trousers or skirts as well?
Yes. Leather trousers and leather skirts are assessed and cleaned in the same way as leather jackets. Bring them in for a quote.
