Dry clean only isn’t a suggestion. It’s a warning based on what the fabric will and won’t tolerate.
Wool felts in water — the fibres lock together permanently when exposed to heat and agitation. Silk loses its sheen and can shrink or distort. Rayon weakens significantly when wet. Structured garments — suit jackets, tailored coats — contain canvas, fusing, or interfacing that can separate, bubble, or warp when water penetrates it.
The care label exists because the manufacturer tested the fabric and knows what damages it. Ignoring it is a gamble — sometimes you get away with it, often you don’t.

Wool is the most vulnerable. At anything above a very cool temperature with any agitation, wool fibres mat together in a process called felting. The garment shrinks — sometimes dramatically — and the texture changes from smooth and soft to rough and dense. This cannot be reversed. The fibres have physically changed at a structural level.
A suit jacket is particularly vulnerable because of its construction. The canvas or fusing inside the chest gives the jacket its shape. Silk can bleed colour, shrink, or lose the lustre that makes it distinctive. Cashmere felts similarly to wool. Structured coats can lose their shape entirely.

Distortion — a garment that’s lost its shape but hasn’t felted — can sometimes be wet-blocked back into shape by a professional. This involves carefully reshaping the damp garment and allowing it to dry in the correct form. Results vary.
Colour bleed in silk or other delicate fabrics is very difficult to reverse.
The honest truth is that the sooner you act, the better your chances of salvaging something. A garment brought to us wet — or immediately after discovering the mistake — gives more options than one that’s been tumble dried on top of the wash damage.
Don’t put it in the tumble dryer. Heat sets damage and permanently locks in distortion. Get it out of the machine as soon as possible.
Don’t wring it or squeeze it. Gentle pressing to remove water is better than twisting.
Lay it flat or hang it carefully on a shaped hanger and let it air dry slowly at room temperature.
